Migration and escape from Africa "Reasons"

We invite teachers and students from the secondary education of selected schools in Dortmund and surroundings, to these regular workshops where the realistic images of Africa will be ascertained, and the causes of migration from Africa will be debated.

The images of the terrible events in Lampedusa that was projected in the media of emaciated figures looking up to Europe for help, the clichéd imagination of the poor and needy continent that has no better information to offer than crises of wars and catastrophes.

Together with the students, we will organize a project day, where we shall thematise the causes and quality of livelihood in this age of globalization, the increasing threats of the people in sub-Saharan Africa, for example, climate change, (self-made) ethnic conflicts, etc.... Furthermore, we would consider the foreclosure and refugee policy of the European countries and the right to freedom of movement and equality and right of development for Africans.
In working group and discussion round-tables, students have the opportunity to work with Speakers from Africa, analysing their different life histories and motivations for migration to Germany.

In authentic encounters with Africans, the students will learn about the problems, and also about the colourful diversity of the "black" continent. Especially for young people, it is very important to replace the ever mounting medial clichéd ideas of Africa with a differentiated image of Africa.

Therefore, our association AfricanTide offers secondary schools through this project: “A realistic image of Africa”.
Interested teachers can contact us to discuss their information needs, and we shall provide them with suitable speakers and educational materials for an exciting and eventful school project day.
