May 25 yearly commemorates the establishment of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on May 25 in Addis Ababa in1963. The OAU was succeeded by the African Union (AU) in 2002. Aim of the OAU was to promote unity and solidarity between all countries on the African continent. This basic concept was continued and further developed in the AU with the following objectives:
- accelerate the political and socio-economic integration of the continent
- to promote and defend African common positions on issues of interest to the continent and its peoples
- to achieve peace and security in Africa
- to promote democratic institutions, good governance and human rights.
Therefore, the African Union Day is of great importance for Africa and the African Diaspora. It symbolizes the advancement made in the achievement of those objectives.
